postheadericon Cleaning Green Carpet

Green Carpet Cleaning, image source : www.greenliving.comEverything's gone green. Who could have guessed that the color of envy would become the most popular color of our times? I guess the blues never really stood a chance. Even the carpet cleaning industry is leaning towards the eco-friendly side of things. More and more carpet cleaning companies are using organic cleaning solutions and practicing eco-friendly cleaning techniques.

But even with everything going eco-friendly there is a misconception that green cleaning products and green cleaning practices aren't as effective as their chemically based brethren. This simply is not true. Here's some info on green carpet cleaning that won't leave you singing the blues.

First of all, back in the day, almost all cleaning products were simple and mostly non-toxic. They didn't have all the chemicals that are around today. Depending on your age, mom, or grandma, used solutions made by mixing water and vinegar or baking soda to do a lot of cleaning. These same products can be used today to take care of most carpet stains and cleaning needs.

A mixture of water and vinegar can be used to remove rust spots in your carpet. Ammonia and cold water can be used to get out blood. A mild soap and water mixture can help with urine if treated immediately. If the urine has been in the carpet over 24 hours then you can use the vinegar and water. Most food and drink products can be removed with a simple solution of warm water, mild detergent, and vinegar.

Many carpet companies are now using cleaning agents that are based on more natural elements rather than harmful chemicals. Non-toxic ingredients such as citrus, vinegar, and salt, are now being used more often than their toxic counterparts. This isn't saying that all the chemicals used by carpet companies are 100% chemical free. But they are much safer and a great deal less toxic than the alternatives.

Not only are the cleaning agents more eco-friendly, the cleaning methods are now getting greener. Today's high tech world has given us updated tools and more efficient cleaning equipment that are less wasteful. Steam cleaners use less water but offer the same, if not better results. There are also "dry" cleaning techniques that use almost no water at all.

The green movement is very trendy right now and it seems that everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. But if you had the choice between a safe, non-toxic cleaning and a more hazardous option, which would you choose? The bottom line is that traditional carpet cleaning products and techniques can be harmful and wasteful. Wouldn't you prefer to have a safer home environment for you and your family if the option were available to you?

postheadericon Green Roof Building

Green Roof Building, image source : www.qwickstep.comGreen roofing is an exciting new prospect for the roofing industry and the world. Green roofing has the potential to take wasted space on the millions of roofs needlessly absorbing the suns energy and convert that into something useful. Green roofing does present some unique problems. Usually roofs are designed to remove water as quickly as possible, but vegetation needs water, and there will be an additional layer of sometimes wet growing material for the roof to support. This means that the roof must be much stronger to support all this additional weight. The roof also needs a very effective drainage system that keeps the part below the growing material dry.

The soil and vegetation layer of a green roof usually consists of low maintenance plants. Therefore the typical roof does not need a irrigation system. If the garden is more for looks or to play on, a irrigations system may be installed. These should be drip systems that deliver the water to the roots to minimize evaporative water loss. But most will let the plants grow naturally. A Denver roofing contractor may have to consult with a nursery on the correct type of plants.

The scientists behinds these roofing systems divide them into intensive and extensive categories. The extensive roof is also called an eco-roof. These are thinner and lighter, but the reduced soil limits the vegetation options. The common plants are mosses and grasses. These grow in a low profile and require little maintenance.

If your Denver roofing contractor is more ambitious, you could try an intensive roof. These have enough soil to make a full garden. This type of construction is ideal if you are looking to make a rooftop garden oasis. Small trees, and little patios can even be housed with enough structural support. If you do get your Denver roofing contractor to install and intensive roof, you will probably have to hire someone to maintain it.

Green roofs are very good insulators and reduce the heat of the roof overall significantly. This saves on heating and air conditioning costs. This can help reduce the heat island effect in urban environments. The plants and soil also filter the air and water in the area. Green roofs are especially popular in urban environments because they add yard space in areas where this was impossible. Filtering the air and providing green space makes urban living much more tolerable.

As a retired Denver roofing contractor I like to talk about the roof repair business and what roofing materials work best in some situations. I also write a Denver roofing blog that gives you tips on how to handle a roofing contractor.

postheadericon 3 Advantages of Green Energy

Green Energy, image source : www.greenourliving.comThe need for green energy is at an all time high as the world is faced with global warming, worldwide floods, and a nasty global haze encircling the planet. There is some environmentally safe energy producing alternatives that anyone can take advantage of that can help reduce the amount of greenhouse produced gasses and even help create cheap electricity bills to ease your budget.

Electricity as a commodity has been around since the mid 1800's. Coal has played a vital role in its production since the 1880's and is also one of the largest contributors to pollution in the world today. As greenhouse gasses continue to deteriorate the Earth's atmosphere, we need to take a step back and see what's really happening here.

Green energy is defined as a type of energy that is produced with little to no environmentally damaging by-products. It is referred to as alternative energy because it provides a safe alternative to the methods in use today such as burning coal, using nuclear materials, and burning other petroleum based products.

Green energy production has 3 advantages over traditional forms of energy. Weigh the advantages over the disadvantages of standard energy production and decide for yourself the best route to a greener planet.

Advantage No. 1: No environmental damaging by-products.

When coal is burned, it produces high emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide. The latter of the two produce acidic rain which damages metals and pollutes the world's oceans. Burning coal also releases mercury which gets into the natural food chain primarily by absorption as seen in some species of fish.

Alternative energy solves this by not producing such by-products. In fact, the types of green energy sources that will be discussed later don't produce any polluting by-products.

Advantage No. 2: It offers a low production cost solution for energy generation.

The cost to produce electricity using coal, nuclear materials, petroleum, and water are very high. Even with hydroelectric energy production, it costs a lot of money to run and maintain the facility. The regulations of nuclear materials are extremely costly and a steady inflow of fresh coal to burn comes at a very high price.

We all pay for these high costs through our electric company's power bill. And prices just keep getting higher and higher as the traditional power plants continually try to improve the process of breaking down bad chemicals being emitted during production.

Green energy offers a very low cost solution to energy production. Either on a large scale or for in home use, the cost is significantly lower because you or a company only pays for the materials used to construct the power source. No fuel is required besides naturally occurring sources such as wind, sunlight, and magnetic.

Advantage No. 3: It offers a low cost advantage for consumers.

Society is very dependent on energy production throughout the world. This energy monopoly causes people to pay a lot of money every year just to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. During this financial depression and extremely hot conditions during the summer months, you can't afford to play around with high energy costs.

In order to produce your own power using green energy sources, it can cost anywhere from $50 to under $1,000 for all of the materials. With these sources, you can supplement your current electricity received from the power company to help lower your electric bill.

Here are some of the green energy sources that you can build yourself and start saving the environment and your hard earned money today:

1. Windmill. A windmill uses naturally occurring wind to spin a conductor through a generator's windings. This power is then used to charge batteries and follow-on equipment such as an inverter that convert the DC to AC which can be used in the home.

2. Solar Power. This green energy source can be a very effective one during the daylight hours. And with batteries, you can charge them up to use while it's dark. Solar cells convert photons which are absorbed by semi conductive silicon cells and knock electrons free from their atoms into electrical energy.

3. Magnetic Generator. Very similar to a regular generator, it uses magnets to continuously spin a conductor through windings within the generator. This mechanical magnetic force allows the generator to virtually run forever with no external influence.

4. Water Turbine. Much like a hydroelectric dam, you can use a stream that runs by your home as a source of fuel for your own water turbine system.

Depending on your available resources, choose the type of green energy source that fits your needs. postheadericon Wind Power Electricity - Is It Practical? Why Would You Want It?

Wind Electricity, image source : dailymail.co.ukMost of our planets power generation is heavily reliant on fossil fuels. This type of generation is mainly from petroleum products such as oil and gas or another highly polluting, unrenewable, cheap and plentiful source - coal. The type of energy sources is dependant on the different needs of the power companies and their consumers. The decision on what to use as a energy source to generate the electricity is mainly based on cost and reliability of supply. However these days the public expect more from their power generation companies and want clean renewable energy forcing the power companies to listen. In New Zealand there is a race to build wind powered turbines to complement our water powered turbines. That's where the alternative clean sources of electricity such as solar power, water power and wind power come in and it is wind power that we want to talk about today.

The basic operation of converting wind to electricity is very simple. First you have the generator!. A generator is the reverse of a electric motor. You rotate the generator and it produces your electricity. How - will it converts kinetic (motion) energy to electrical energy (the reverse of an electric motor - electrical to kinetic). As an electric generator, it needs a separate device that can provide the kinetic energy in order to operate and produce electricity. This device is actually any mechanical force that rotates a certain part of the generator. In the beginning, people manually rotated the generator for power production. This of course was very impractical but electricity was set to change the future and lives of everyone. As electricity caught on and got developed, other sources of mechanical force to act as the prime mover of the generator. The most common being a turbine rotated by high pressure steam generated from the burning of fossil fuels, The high pressure steam is forced through a turbine providing the kinetic energy for the generator.

The generation of wind power electricity is a good example of clean mostly reliable energy. It is clean because there are no harmful gases or chemicals emitted during the process and no precious unrenewable resources consumed in the manufacture of electricity, it is mostly reliable because of course it is entirely dependent of constant wind. Environmentalists push for implementation of more wind turbines to the power companies to provide them with electricity. The only problem that has arisen is the placement of the turbines! Although they need to be close to the community they are going to serve, the public is becoming increasingly resistant to turbines being close to their homes. This is understandable due to the noise and vibration emitted from very large turbines. After negotiations with the affected parties a compromise is more often eventually reached. Disadvantages aside just imagine a world with clean sources of energy: it would be wind powered smokeless, odourless and environmentally friendly an wouldn't be nuclear.

The other problem with wind power electricity is the placement of the turbines. The more consistent the wind the more energy produced and the more financially viable the whole expensive set up is. Unfortunately most common locations are coastal areas, beaches and hill tops where there is a sea breeze during the daytime and land breeze during the night time on beaches. The wind on hill tops is consistent but can be a eyesore.

This brings in the problem of who wants big turbines on there beach or blocking their views? Compromises have to be reached. But with enough wind power, electricity generation can vary between several kilowatts on a individual home to megawatts on a giant industrial turbine, enough to provide power from small to a medium sized community. These days there are wind farms near cities that generate enough wind power electricity to supply the whole city and more! There are also homes and buildings with there own personnel wind turbines to generate there own wind power electricity with excess electricity being fed back into the power companies grid where they get a payment. This assists in the initial cost and up keep of turbines.

With Global Warming increasing its impact on humanity, we really don't have a choice! We need to change the way we generate electricity globally now.
